Fire Risk Assessment

We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and others from fire.

These roles are set out in the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005. Part 3 of the Act specifies who has responsibility for fire safety in non-domestic premises in Scotland. Even though you may never have had any responsibilities for fire safety before, you may find that under the new law you do have some responsibilities. If you operate your business from non-domestic premises, or have a house of multiple occupancy which requires a licence, then it is a legal requirement for you to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment and to ensure it is regularly updated. Failure to comply could result in personal prosecutions and/or imprisonment, and, you are also at risk of invalidating your insurance cover.

What Is A Fire Safety Risk Assessment?

A fire safety risk assessment is an organised and methodical look at the premises, the activities within the premises, the potential for a fire to occur and the harm it could cause to the people in and around the premises. The existing fire safety measures are evaluated and kept under review to establish whether they are adequate or if more requires to be done.

The aims of a fire safety risk assessment are:-
